It is hard to believe my little boy is growing up SO fast! It seems like just yesterday we met him for the first time, ugly little thing that he was, with his enormous cone-head and blue all over. Thankfully, Linus has grown into a very handsome boy with nicely browned skin and although his head is nowhere near being round, it certainly isn’t cone shaped anymore.
Linus started kindergarten last week. He was so excited he could barely contain himself.
I am actually quite shocked he slept the night before.
I considered following my mother-in-law’s lead and not tell him until the morning of, but I was excited too. So he found out.
Dana used to have to wait until last minute to tell my husband, Jeremiah, about anything that might be perceived as exciting because he would get so anxious that he wouldn’t sleep at all the night before. I believe it went something like, “Oh Jeremiah, go change into some clean clothes, it’s your birthday today and we’re having a party in an hour.” (envision a 10 year old child bouncing off the walls down the hall to his room to change). Seriously.
Jeremiah has to be handled with a certain amount of care and precision.
Linus, however, seems to be able to tolerate a certain amount of excitement. Although the morning of his first day he was dressed in his uniform, packed his own snack, had his backpack on and was strapped into his booster seat in the car by about 0600.
Hey, at least he slept.
I absolutely LOVED how they did the first day. It really was more of an introduction day, so parents came with, and the kids got to sort of practice what the day would be like.
So after dropping my other two little darlings with a sitter, Linus and I headed over to school. As we walked into the classroom he was hit by a little shyness and didn’t want to go in. So being the reassuring mother that I am, I pushed him through the door into the classroom anyway.
He was told to hang his backpack on his hook and take his seat which he did.
First they organized their art supplies in their bins and then they got to do a little project which included coloring and cutting and pasting.
The teacher read them a book and sang a little song for the kids which included them introducing themselves to the class. Then they got to line up and go out for ‘recess’. Then they went back into class without the parents and collected their backpacks while the parents went and got our cars to practice picking the kids up.
It was perfect. Linus was ready and raring to go the next morning and there no problem with dropping him off and having first time jitters or anything. He was cool and confident as usual.
I think it’s going to be a great year and as a mom who was home schooled and never attended a public school until high school I have a feeling I’m going to learn a lot too 🙂
