My kids LOVE coloring on the little white board I have. What is it about white boards that are SO fun? I love them too, I have to admit.
So the other day, Linus was off somewhere and Juliette wanted to color and asked if she could have the white board. I got it down for her and gave her our one remaining dry erase marker that works and she was happily, coloring away.
Then she said, “Mom, I wan write my name.”
I thought to myself, “Hmmm, how are we going to do this? She has a long name….”
But then I thought, “Ah ha”.
We’ll just go one letter at a time.
So of course we started with, ‘J’ for Juliette.
As you can see in the picture above she did rather well. That was, after all, not only the very first J she has ever written, but the first letter she has ever written (the first two were mine and the third one is hers – just in case you were confused).
She worked very hard on it and she was SO proud of herself that I had to photograph it.
Which made her even more proud of herself.
Juliette shows a huge interest in reading, which is exciting to me. I was always a reader. I love to read.
I don’t get to very often these days, but I love it when I get a really great book to read. (I am always looking for suggestions by the way….)
I love seeing Juliette sitting in a corner by herself just drinking in books. She has no idea what they say most of the time but it doesn’t matter to her. She loves just sitting and looking. Often times she brings them to me to read to her if she just can’t stand not knowing anymore.
I always find it so interesting to see what books they choose when I tell them it’s reading time. Linus always, always chooses something science based. Well sometimes he will go back to story books, like the Magic Tree House Series or something like that, but 9 times out of 10 he will choose something about space, anatomy or dinosaurs. Personally I have always thought of dinosaurs as kind of weird, but we often end up with some really great conversations through them. So I don’t mind too much.
Juliette generally chooses animal or anatomy books and the occasional girlie princess type story or the Bible, which completely warms my heart.
Christian mostly chooses animal books, but that’s about all we have as far as board books go and he seems to have figured out that he likes the board books.
I cannot believe the things I have learned about frogs, anatomy, outer space and dinosaurs through reading to my kids and it boggles my mind to think about how much THEY are learning.
There is no other activity I would rather do with my kids than read books to them. What could be better than snuggling with all three of your children on the couch, reading a book? So that is why I am so excited for Juliette to start reading and writing, the world of knowledge that is placed at their fingertips when they learn these skills is limitless.
