So over the last few years I have learn a lot about diet and dieting and how my body handles food. I thought since I am trying to behave myself for a couple weeks before my sister’s wedding I would share with you how I slim down right before an event.
This is a concept I learned from Jillian Michael’s book, “Making the Cut”. At the end of it, after you have spent a month doing her torturous (but wonderful) routines, followed her specific diet plan and lost a bunch of weight, she acknowledges that you can’t be ‘on’ all the time and even though you have made healthy changes in your lifestyle, sometimes you need a little boost right before some big event that you really want to look amazing for.
Personally I learned (in the process of following her diet) that if I eat processed, white flour I get this little food baby almost instantly. I seriously look like I am 2 months pregnant. So long as I stick to whole grains – I’m good. That is a problem for me most of the time with all the baking I do and the extreme lack of self control I have when it comes to food. So in these last couple weeks before Lissa’s wedding I am trying to get that white flour out of my system. It helps that I now have my grain mill so I can easily use whole wheat flour in place of the white flour, even for thickening sauces and making pastries or whatever. Freshly ground wheat tastes SO much better than the whole wheat flour you buy at the store. On that same note about the white flour, I had gestational diabetes when I pregnant with both Linus and Juliette and one thing I noticed was that I could eat sugar all I wanted and it wouldn’t make a huge difference in my glucose levels, but if I ate something made with white flour my levels would be out the roof. So obviously my body doesn’t like the stuff (which is one reason why I bought the grain mill).
So now that I have been rambling on you are probably wondering when I am going to get to the point.
Please remember that I am not trying to loose any weight, I have hit my weight goal and surpassed it a while ago. If you are trying to actively loose weight this is probably helpful but not really what you are looking for. I am just trying to make sure I look great in a dress that is going to show every little white flour grain that I have eaten.
It’s pretty simple really, I am maintaining my exercise pattern of working out three times a week doing a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout, usually between 15-20 minutes (for workout routines check out www.bodyrock.tv).
What I like to do is eat a lot of small meals throughout the day. I have maybe a scrambled egg and a half a piece of toast for breakfast and the instant I start to feel full I pass the rest of my food to Christian or the dog. If I leave it sitting on a plate anywhere within my reach I will continue eating, so I have to get rid of it. But then I eat a healthy snack about 2 hours later, one of my favorites is a protein ball. One of those little guys will keep me full for 2 hours, no problem. I don’t let myself get super hungry but then I stop before I feel completely full – it’s a fine line. So I end up eating about 6-7 mini meals every day. So these delicious dinner recipes you see on the site are usually Jeremiah’s size portions and not mine. Mine are a little depressing I admit, after spending time making something, you want to eat a lot of it. But I usually just tell myself I can have another small portion later.
There are a lot of really great snack ideas out there, if you have one, please leave a comment as I am always looking for more, but between breakfast and dinner, this is pretty much what I eat:
Protein balls
Almonds, raw – not roasted or salted or anything
Lara bars – these are great, look at the ingredient list:
