Yesterday out of boredom Christian rummaged through a drawer that he hadn’t been through in a while and found this little family activity calendar that I got at the women’s retreat last fall.
I remember looking at it and thinking it looked like fun and then stuck it in the drawer.
So when he pulled it out I thought to myself, “Oh, we should use that!”.
I stuck it up in the kitchen window last night after the kids went to bed.
The family activity for today was, “Random Acts of Kindness”
I sat the kids down this morning and we talked about what that means and what it can mean to other people. Then we tried to brainstorm some good ideas for what we could do.
Linus really wanted to go help the neighbors with their gardens.
Nice, but unfortunately we live in a neighborhood with pretty small yards and I have not seen anyone who has a garden and on top of that, it’s winter.
So I had to nix that idea.
In the end we decided to start with just helping each other (since pretty much all our neighbors work and aren’t home anyway). So although Juliette and Christian are the ones who primarily play in the playroom and mess it up, Linus helped clean it up. Then we all went down to the basement together and helped clean up Linus’ legos.
After that I had the kids help each other clean their rooms.
That was great. It took a little longer and there was more fighting. But in the end they helped each other to get the job done and they were pretty pleased with themselves for it.
Christian tried to help by putting a couple toys away here and there but mostly just kept eating the markers that Linus had hidden in his room. I guess that is what happens when you disobey marker rules.
Your markers get eaten.
So although it was not an ideal way to practice Random Acts of Kindness, I felt like it was start and they got the picture. Maybe next time we can be a little more adventurous.
